Military trick to TRAINING your brain
I’ll admit I was a little skeptical when I heard about the “tennis ball trick.”
The theory is that if you SQUEEZE a tennis ball in your hand… it can ACTIVATE your brain.
And here’s the kicker…
You can TARGET a specific area of your brain… just by choosing one hand over the other!
Let me explain.
A 2013 study out of Montclair State University found that clenching your left hand increases neuronal activity in the right hemisphere of your brain…
And the opposite is true, too.
If you want to TRIGGER activity in your brain’s left hemisphere… you can clench your right hand!
Now, BOTH of your brain’s hemispheres are involved in cognitive function, including memory…
But the two different halves work “hand in hand,” you could say.
Each has a different but complementary function!
That makes sense, as previous research has shown how emotions manifest differently from the two sides of the brain.
In the study I just mentioned, right-handed folks were wired up to an EEG monitoring system while “studying” a group of words they’d be tested on later.
Based on which hand the participants clenched briefly (all it took was just 90 seconds)… and how well they performed on the word recall test…
The researchers found that the “left brain” is key in making memories (or memorizing information)… and the “right brain” steps forward when it comes to retrieving memories.
That means if you want to LEARN information, squeeze your RIGHT hand.
And if you want to REMEMBER what you learned, squeeze your LEFT hand.
It could be as simple as that!
That study only tested right-handed folks… so lefties might find different results.
It also tested only words… and not images (like being able to remember a face) or spatial information (like being able to remember where you left your glasses or how to get home from somewhere).
But I love this because it has NOTHING to do with filling Big Pharma’s pockets – only with helping you stay sharp.
In fact, this study was funded in part by the U.S. Army!
And if anybody needs to stay on their toes… it’s the soldiers who defend our country and ensure our freedom.
Even better, there’s really no risk of trying this at home.
If you don’t have a tennis ball, you can buy them at any sporting goods store for less than a dollar apiece.
You could try clenching your empty hands… or holding something else, like a small rubber ball or one of those squishy stress toys.
You can get a “stress ball” for under $5… or even FREE from a grocery store, bank, or other local business that gives them out as a promotional item.
