Junk food REWIRES your brain?! (Study)
You know you SHOULDN’T eat it…
And that you’ll probably feel GUILTY if you do…
But even if you have the strongest willpower in the world… it’s tough to RESIST the temptation of eating junk food.
Even I’ll admit, it’s hard — when presented with a donut or an apple – to pick the healthier option (who doesn’t love donuts?).
So, I’m not here to SCOLD you for eating a sweet treat every now-and-then…
However, if your mind can’t resist the temptation of reaching for the JUNK… there’s a new study that says it’s not entirely your fault…
Because those occasional indulges may be subconsciously REWIRING your brain to cause the behavior!
Check this out.
A German study (in collaboration with Yale University researchers) has discovered that our brains learn to subconsciously PREFER and CRAVE fatty and sugary foods – even when you stop eating them.
It’s almost like junk food BRAINWASHES you!
This eight-week study measured the brain activity of two groups. One was given a dessert high in fat and sugar (rich pudding) each day for two months alongside their normal diet. The other group received a daily dessert which contained the exact same number of calories, but less fat.
The brain activity of the volunteers in both groups was measured before and during the eight-week experiment.
They found that the brain reactions of those given the pudding significantly increased after eight weeks — particularly activating the region responsible for motivation and reward and releasing dopamine.
Dopamine (aka the “pleasure hormone”) give us a sense of pleasure and the motivation to do something when we’re feeling such pleasure. Every time we do something we enjoy (such as eating food we like) small amounts of dopamine are released into our brains…
And the more dopamine that’s released, the more your body is TRAINED to like something!
So, yes, junk food can literally play mind tricks on your body if you’re not careful.
Again, I’m not saying you need to cut out all sweets. It’s all about moderation, and willpower (which can take some mental toughness).
And not everything sweet is bad for you.
Take cocoa for example. Unrefined cocoa is the base ingredient for dark chocolate and it’s good for your heart.
