WARD OFF the common cold with this yellow root
I don’t know about you, but I got a little spoiled last winter.
I wasn’t sick for even ONE DAY.
But THIS winter is a lot different than LAST year… and thank goodness it is!
We’re back to family gatherings… shared meals… and holiday celebrations.
But “getting back out there” on holidays like today means we’ll be FACING a lot more germs than we have been…
Especially with the little ones heading back to school and daycare… and bringing all those bugs back home with them!
We’ve got to make sure we’ve got SOLID protection… and that our immune systems are READY.
You may already have your vitamin C and even some echinacea on hand…
But I’ve got something else for you to consider today.
It’s one of the most important herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine — originally described in China’s most ancient medical text.
Here’s what it can do for you… especially as we approach the thick of cold and flu season.
Batten down the hatches
In the West, we call it astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)…
But in China, it’s known as “Huang-qi”… which translates to mean “yellow leader.”
That may be because this legume’s yellow-colored root LEADS THE PACK when it comes to combatting allergies… sepsis… and more.
Now, both of those conditions share something in common – an overactive immune response.
But an extract called astragalus polysaccharide (APS) has shown to help BALANCE an immune response…
And even REVERSE immune hypersensitivity!
And it could help RESTORE some normality to the immune-triggered inflammatory levels, too.
But astragalus could also help your body get ready to FIGHT OFF an incoming infection… like a cold.
It could help SHORE UP your defenses to keep the infection at bay…
Including RAMPING UP white blood cells and SUPPORTING the function of certain “immune organs,” like the thymus gland.
But that’s not all.
Because this herb has demonstrated both antibacterial and antiviral properties…
Which means it also could help KILL the pathogens directly!
Now, in TCM, it’s recommended that you take astragalus as a PREVENTATIVE measure to FEND OFF a cold or respiratory infection…
But not take it when you’re already sick.
Astragalus is widely available as a supplement from quality makers… usually as a tincture or in capsule form.
Look for one at your local health food store or online that’s been standardized to contain a certain percentage of polysaccharides.
You may find it with other “immune support” supplements and formulas… and you can combine it with other complementary herbs like echinacea and ginger.
Of course, check with your doc to make sure any herb is safe for you to try.
