Gobble Up These Brain Gains
Thanksgiving week is often full of movement—cooking, hosting, and maybe even a family game of touch football.
But did you know that any physical activity, no matter how light, could give your brain a boost?
New research shows that all types of movement—from walking the dog to tackling household chores—can improve cognitive processing speed, giving your brain the equivalent of four extra years of sharpness.
No need to hit the gym—this might be the easiest way to keep your brain in shape while preparing for the holiday feast!
The Penn State College of Medicine study found that even light activities like tidying up or walking can help rejuvenate the brain.
Over a week, researchers tracked participants’ physical movements in real time using smartphone apps. Participants also completed short brain games to measure their processing speed.
The results? People performed mental tasks faster after physical activity, regardless of intensity. Researchers noted an average gain equivalent to reclaiming four years of cognitive processing speed!
This is great news for those who aren’t inclined toward high-intensity workouts—your everyday movements are more powerful than you think.
While researchers don’t fully understand the mechanisms yet, they have a few ideas…
- Increased Alertness: Physical activity may heighten your overall awareness, preparing your brain for quicker responses.
- Improved Blood Flow: Moving your body can enhance circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the brain.
- Cardiovascular Benefits: Regular movement lowers blood pressure and boosts heart health, which in turn supports cognitive function.
For more sustained brain benefits, moderate-to-vigorous exercise is still king, promoting long-term changes like increased release of brain-boosting chemicals and improved neuroplasticity.
But even light movement offers short-term perks that make a difference.
Maybe you’re not a fan of traditional exercise. No problem! Here are easy ways to stay active and give your brain a lift:
- Walk Around the Block: Even a 10-minute stroll can help clear your mind and boost alertness.
- Tackle Chores: Cleaning the kitchen or raking leaves counts as light exercise—and gets your to-do list done!
- Join Family Activities: Thanksgiving games like touch football or a post-dinner stroll can double as brain-boosting exercises.
- Break It Up: Small bursts of activity throughout the day are just as effective as longer sessions.
This Thanksgiving, while you’re busy preparing dinner or entertaining guests, remember that all that movement isn’t just burning calories—it’s sharpening your mind.
Get the whole family involved in activities like a turkey trot, a friendly game of tag, or even a kitchen dance party while cooking.
But at the end of the day, you don’t have to run marathons to protect your brain. Every step, stretch, and chore adds up to better mental sharpness and cognitive health.
