The weather has been wild the fast few weeks…

From blizzard warnings in Los Angeles to summer heat in the South… who knows what we can expect this spring?!

But there’s one thing you should keep a close eye on no matter what the weather is in your neck of the woods…

The SUN – especially overexposure to UV rays that can increase your risk of skin cancer!

But today I’ve got a natural way to help protect your skin year-round.

A study published in the Journal of the American Academy Dermatology found that eating GRAPES can shield your skin from ultraviolet (UV) light damage.

Yes, this includes the same grapes grown in the vineyards of Napa Valley and the ones stocked at your local grocery store.

You see, no matter what time of year it is, prolonged exposure to UV light increases your risk of developing skin cancer.

But the study found that antioxidants called polyphenols – which are abundant in grapes –act as an ‘edible sunscreen’ by providing an added layer of UV light protection for the skin.

After eating two cups of grapes every day for two weeks, the study participant’s Minimal Erythema Dose (MED) improved.

MED is the slight amount of radiation from UV light required to induce reddening of the skin in a person up to 24 hours from exposure.

In other words, by simply eating grapes consistently, folks became MORE resistant to UV light!

Now, it should be noted that grapes are not a hall pass to lay out for hours in the sun without protection… but simply that they act as a natural barrier for damaging UV light.

If you are going to be out in the sun for a prolonged period, protect exposed skin as best you can.

Just remember, when it comes to sunscreen, there are tons of options out there… and they all aren’t created equal!

I opt for mineral sunscreen. Unlike conventional sunscreens which are loaded with chemicals, mineral sunscreen is natural, has fewer ingredients and sits on the skin while preventing UV rays from penetrating the skin.

Bare Republic makes mineral sunscreen for the face and body and will run you close to $15 per bottle.

To year-round skin protection,

Sarah Reagan
