Personally, I don’t drink much alcohol.

But I sure won’t stick my nose up at you if you like to indulge in an adult beverage every once in a while.

And there are plenty of health benefits to certain types of alcohol (like red wine, which is packed with antioxidants).

But, drinking too much alcohol can cause health issues like gout and weight gain…

Which is exactly why if you do choose to drink, you should do it in moderation.

But a new study out of Australia is putting a new twist on a long-standing assumption about alcohol…

Saying that booze can actually help you SHED POUNDS.

BUT before you reach for another glass of wine… or pour another beer…

There’s more to this study than meets the eye… and your waistline.

A study from the Australian National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey says that drinking alcohol can help folks shed pounds.

Sounds too good to be true, right?

After all, the average beer clocks in at 150 calories… and a glass of wine is around 120 calories. And that’s not even the sugar content!

Well, here’s the kicker with this latest study.

It can aid in weight loss…

As long as you eat NUTS, healthy snacks, and HIGH-PROTEIN foods.

Let me explain.

The study found that drinkers who opted for high-protein, lean foods consumed FEWER calories overall than people who abstained from drinking entirely.

Analysis showed they consumed an average 1,749 calories daily, including those from alcohol.

This was 577 FEWER than they needed to maintain current weight… and 451 less than the 2,200 racked up by the non-drinkers – who ended up eating additional calories from foods like potato chips, pigs-in-blankets, processed meats, garlic bread, spring rolls and potato wedges.

The study leaders determined that drinking alcohol can influences your levels of FGF-21 – a hormone that increases protein appetite and at times suppresses your appetite for sweetness (which can reduce the desire to eat junk food).

The folks who stuck to high-protein foods and drank required less calories throughout the day. And the fewer calories you consume, the less risk you have of packing on pounds.

I’m going to leave the rest of the study alone because…

Put simply, this all ultimately depends on the rest of your diet.

First, there’s nothing wrong with drinking alcohol in moderation.

And, of course eating a high-protein, low-carb diet (like Paleo) void of junk processed food is going to keep your waistline from ballooning. We’ve been saying that for years!

The bottom line?

If you drink alcohol, drink it in moderation. And, stick to a balanced diet with quality proteins and fats and limit processed foods as much as you can (which I know can be hard during the holiday season).

To a healthy diet and waistline,
Sarah Reagan
