There’s one botanical breakthrough that comes from the root of a flowering plant — one you may THINK you already know everything about.
But most of us in this country have NO IDEA what it can do… or even which variety to cultivate for its OPTIMAL medicinal value!

And it comes from one of history’s greatest global superpowers.
A forager’s fortune
The first to cultivate orchids… and describe their medicinal use… were the ancient Chinese.
Confucius called the orchid the “King of Fragrant Plants”
But it’s the traditional Arabian medicine known as “unani” that helped spread one particular type of orchid-derived medicine throughout the rest of the world.
It’s called salep (a.k.a. sahlep) – and it’s a flour made from the root tubers of the genus Orchis that have been harvested from the wild, then dried and ground.
There are DOZENS of orchid species known as the “salep plant,” but the most common and potent ones are:
- Orchis mascula (the “purple orchid”)
- Orchis morio (the “green-winged orchid”)
- Orchis maculata (the “spotted orchid”)
- Orchis latifolia (the “early marsh orchid”).
And while I guarantee that you’ve NEVER heard of salep here in this country…
It’s incredibly popular in countries that were formerly part of the Ottoman Empire — like Turkey and Greece.
You see, when Ottoman farmers used to pick the flowers from the wild, they noticed the funny-looking roots… usually a pair of lobes that resembled a certain body part of men.
They THOUGHT that meant they would boost desire and fertility…
But instead of getting a baby boom, they saw all their digestive problems DISAPPEAR.
That’s how salep became a daily staple in their diets.
They used it in a warm, creamy drink (also called “saloop”), whose popularity spread to England and beyond – at least, before coffee and tea took over.
You can still buy a cup of salep from street vendors in Greece.
People of the Middle East and Europe have loved it for AGES because it soothes your digestive tract even when you’ve got such “gut issues” as acid reflux, gas and bloating, and upset stomach.
It can even alleviate stomach aches and intestinal cramps.
And it’s so gentle, it’s commonly used to treat diarrhea in very young children!
Its action is all thanks to a mucus-like substance (a.k.a. mucilage) that forms a demulcent gel when mixed with water in your gut.
There’s just one problem…
It’s illegal to collect the salep orchids from the wild in Greece… and forbidden to export true salep from Turkey.
Salep has gotten SO popular – more popular now than ever – that the demand has driven the orchids to the brink of extinction.
Our only hope of bringing salep to our shores is for a wider cultivation of the orchids.

Just beware of imposters – especially any product that claims it’s “salep-flavored.”
