If you have trouble getting to sleep, you’ve probably tried everything to catch 40 winks.
You’ve counted sheep… kept your room pitch-black… and maybe even bought one of those white noise machines.
But there’s a new “sleep trick” that many seniors are using – and it could be a one-way ticket to an early grave.
It involves a simple OTC drug you can buy just about anywhere.
And it’s MUCH more dangerous than we’ve ever been told.
The devil’s in the details
As you get older, you can wind up spending your entire day preparing for the moment you hit the pillow at night.
No coffee after lunch… no spicy foods for dinner… and no sugary snacks before bed.
One false move, and you’ll spend all night staring at the ceiling.
But too many seniors are relying on a little extra help from an unexpected source.
And that could be why the antihistamine (also known as diphenhydramine) ranked 11th on a new federal list of drugs linked to overdose deaths.
Benadryl was supposed to be just an allergy drug – but because it makes you drowsy, far more people are taking it than ever before.
And lots of those people NEVER KNEW how dangerous taking Benadryl could be.
Even if you are just taking Benadryl for allergies, it can still get you into a lot of trouble.
Diphenhydramine is an ingredient also found in OTC sleep aids like Unisom and sleep-inducing cold medicines like ZzzQuil.
So if you’re taking Benadryl along with a sleep aid, you’d have NO IDEA that you’re getting a double dose of the SAME EXACT DRUG.
The truth is, you should probably AVOID a drug like Benadryl if you’re on the older side. You should only take the LOWEST dose possible… and only for EMERGENCY allergic reactions.
That’s because as you get older, your body absorbs more of the drugs you take and eliminates less of them.
That means you generally need less drugs… and that you’ll feel stronger effects and side effects from the drugs you do take.
Benadryl is supposed to be a LAST RESORT for a severe allergy, after other antihistamines have failed.
It was never supposed to be part of a bedtime routine.
But too many docs leave their older patients in the dark about these risks.
Long-term use of antihistamines like Benadryl has even been linked to dementia.
If you have trouble sleeping, you can use a natural snooze-booster like the “sleep hormone” melatonin or calming herbs like valerian and kava kava to get rested.
