Crestor ad shows what could happen when you take it!
It’s a commercial that’s hard to miss. It’s been aired around 5,000 times.
It shows a man who seems totally obsessed with the statin drug Crestor. He dresses in a Crestor-orange jacket. So does his dog. When a “doctor” on TV tells how Crestor’s numbers beat Lipitor, he jumps up and down and yells “Way to go, Crestor!” His wife and family just sit there shaking their heads. His room is filled with Crestor décor. He also has a Crestor-colored car.
And you might wonder, “Does this guy have all his marbles? Was he always this dumb?”
Well, maybe not.
An Iowa State University study done back in 2009 found that statins like Crestor, in reducing cholesterol, may also lower IQ as well.
Brain cells deprived of cholesterol, according to the research, are five times less effective at releasing chemical messengers. That can “directly affect how smart you are and how well you remember things,” said Yeon-Kyun Shin, the biophysics professor who led the study. It can also “lead to depression and irrational acts and even raise the risk of suicide,” he said.
While the “goofy dad” depicted in the ad doesn’t appear to be depressed, he certainly does seem irrational.
And who can say that he won’t become suicidal if his Crestor’s ‘score’ should fall behind that of Lipitor.
