Vermont law to have GMOs labeled needs your help!

If you want to know when you’re buying one of those genetically engineered “Frankenfoods” you’re not alone.

There are a whole lot of others who feel the same way. Including most of the folks who live in Vermont.

And now they’ve done something about it.

Vermonters have persuaded their Legislature to pass the country’s first law requiring the labeling of foods with GMOs. You may have heard about some of these scary creations, like the monster salmon, or oranges with genes from a pig.

As you can imagine Big Food isn’t too happy about what Vermont is doing. That’s why its lobby, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, is considering suing the state to stop the new law. Vermont was expecting that, and has put away some funds to fight them in court.

But the food companies that oppose GMO labeling are also trying another tactic. And this is one you can help fight.

They got one of their friends in Congress, Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo, to introduce a bill that would take away Vermont’s — or any other state’s — right to make such a law. It would allow only the FDA to require labeling. And then only if it finds such foods are a health hazard.

Give me a break! The FDA can’t even make the simplest decision on its own, let alone one this important.

Not to mention the guy who approved this big experiment was already given a key food post at the FDA by Obama. So it’s not like he’s going to override himself.

Here’s how you can help Vermont defend your right to know — even if you live in Florida. Call or email your representatives in Congress and tell them to vote against this bill. It’s called HR 4432, or the “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2014.”
