This might be the worst possible way to guard against pneumonia
Here’s another example of wishful thinking dressed up as research.
Some claim that statin drugs might prevent pneumonia.
The newest “evidence” comes from the JUPITER trial. More than 17,800 subjects took statins or a placebo. Researchers found 257 cases of pneumonia in the placebo group. There were 214 cases in the statin group.
Now, if this study had used 500 subjects, the numbers would be impressive. But out of 17,800+ subjects? No way. The difference between 214 and 257 is a blip. At most.
But look what happens. Doctors can now say that “research shows” statins reduce pneumonia risk.
That’s how modern old wives’ tales get started. Even though there’s virtually no evidence to back them up.
