Unique qualifications for the new FDA commissioner
If Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg ever paid a kid five bucks to shovel snow off her front walk and she didn’t report it to the IRS, then she’ll soon find herself embroiled in an embarrassing scandal that will prevent her confirmation as new FDA commissioner.
But if Dr. Hamburg has no such skeletons in her closet, then we’re most likely looking at the next person who will take on the barrage of slings and arrows from just about everyone. Including me, of course.
According to the New York Times, Dr. Hamburg successfully brought a tuberculosis crisis under control when she was the New York City health commissioner, 1991-1997. More recently, she created a bioterrorism initiative for the Department of Health and Human Services.
Hmmm. When it comes to dealing with drug company lobbyists, a background in bioterrorism might be the perfect job experience.
