We already know coffee does a lot more than keep us awake.

Study after study has linked it to everything from better brain function to a healthier heart.

So, it’s no surprise we’ve praised coffee’s health benefits many times before here at e-Alert.

But new research from Germany just added another powerful perk to the list—and if your morning routine includes a fresh cup of joe, you might already be feeling it.

Researchers from Bielefeld University and the University of Warwick studied the effects of coffee and other caffeinated drinks on nearly 240 young adults.

Over the course of four weeks, participants reported their mood throughout the day—alongside whether they’d had caffeine in the past 90 minutes.

The results? Drinking coffee in the morning led to a significant boost in mood.

Participants said they felt happier and more enthusiastic on mornings when they had coffee compared to those when they hadn’t yet had any.

Interestingly, the mood-enhancing effect wasn’t just for hardcore caffeine addicts or folks who typically struggle with anxiety or sleep. The positive impact was consistent across nearly all groups.

Even more fascinating? The mood benefits were strongest early in the day—suggesting your first cup may offer the biggest emotional lift.

The scientists believe it comes down to how caffeine blocks adenosine, a compound that promotes sleepiness. Blocking adenosine can raise levels of dopamine, a brain chemical involved in energy, motivation, and—you guessed it—mood.

But here’s where things get murky. Some experts caution that the mood bump might not come from coffee’s effects alone. It could also be the result of ending caffeine withdrawal. Even moderate users can wake up with minor withdrawal symptoms that vanish with that first sip.

Still, the takeaway is clear: your morning brew may do more than just wake you up—it might help start your day on a brighter note.

Before you start doubling down on caffeine, a word of caution…

Coffee is a powerful substance, and too much—especially late in the day—can backfire by disrupting sleep, increasing anxiety, or causing dependency.

But if you already enjoy a moderate cup (or two) each morning, you’ve now got one more reason to raise your mug with joy.

Here’s to a perkier morning—and a happier start to your day,
