The Ingredient Wrecking Your Gut
You probably wouldn’t sprinkle polysorbate 80 on your dinner. Or ask for a side of carrageenan with your chicken soup.
But if you’re eating store-bought bread, ice cream, salad dressing, or even oat milk… chances are, you already are.
They’re called emulsifiers—chemicals used in processed foods to keep things creamy, smooth, and shelf-stable.
But new research shows that these additives could be doing something far worse than improving texture…
They may be destroying your gut from the inside out.
Let’s break this down.
Emulsifiers like polysorbate 80, carboxymethyl cellulose, maltodextrin, and carrageenan are everywhere in the modern food supply.
They’re in foods that seem “healthy.” Even organic or plant-based options may contain them.
So what’s the problem?
According to scientists from France, the U.S., and global health institutions, these compounds:
- Disrupt your gut microbiome—the ecosystem of bacteria that protects your health
- Weaken your intestinal lining, making it more permeable (a.k.a. “leaky gut”)
- Trigger chronic inflammation that may ripple through your body, worsening conditions like:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Metabolic disorders
- Autoimmune disease
- And possibly cancer
And while much of the early research was in animals or simulated gut models, more doctors are now saying they see the effects in real life.
In fact, gastroenterologist Dr. Ashwin Ananthakrishnan from Mass General Hospital says many patients experience relief from symptoms like bloating, pain, and fatigue when they cut out emulsifiers.
Lewis Rands, a patient who battled debilitating gut issues, made a dramatic recovery by removing emulsifiers from his diet.
His symptoms eased—without drugs—just by changing what he ate.
That’s the kind of result you can’t ignore.
And it aligns with a growing body of concern from researchers and even federal regulators. Emulsifiers were recently flagged in a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) memo on harmful additives in processed foods.
Even FDA Commissioner Martin Makary testified that these ingredients, particularly those that disrupt the microbiome, deserve urgent scrutiny.
But here’s the kicker…
These additives are still LEGAL—and lurking in your food
Why?
Because many emulsifiers were deemed “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) years ago—long before scientists understood the importance of the gut microbiome.
Now, we know better.
And yet, they remain in our food. No warning label. No limit. No accountability.
You don’t have to wait for the FDA to act. You can protect your gut—and your overall health—today:
- Read labels: Avoid products with ingredients like polysorbate 80, carrageenan, maltodextrin, or carboxymethyl cellulose
- Choose whole, unprocessed foods: The fewer ingredients, the better
- Support your microbiome: Eat more fermented foods (like sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt), fiber-rich veggies, and prebiotic foods (like garlic and onions)
- Try a quality probiotic to help restore balance after years of chemical exposure
- Cook at home more often to stay in control of what you eat
Your gut is the gateway to your immune system, your brain, and your long-term health.
But chemicals like emulsifiers—approved long before science caught up—are quietly breaking down that barrier.
Don’t wait for regulators to catch up. Cut them out now—and your gut will thank you.Stay smooth—but not at the expense of your gut,
