New research suggests that a simple, over-the-counter supplement—one that costs a fraction of what pharmaceutical companies charge for cognitive drugs—could help slow age-related memory decline.
The best part? It doesn’t require a doctor’s visit, a prescription, or a laundry list of side effects.
But before you rush to stock up, there’s one crucial thing you need to know…
A recent study from King’s College London revealed that prebiotic supplements—specifically inulin and fructooligosaccharide (FOS)—can enhance brain function in adults over 60.
These plant fibers act as food for beneficial gut bacteria, helping them thrive. And when your gut is happy, it turns out your brain might be, too.
Researchers studied 36 pairs of twins to see how daily prebiotic supplementation affected memory. One twin in each pair took inulin or FOS daily, while the other received a placebo.
After just 12 weeks, the twin taking prebiotics scored higher on memory and learning tests—the same tests used to detect early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
What’s more, these improvements in brain function corresponded with an increase in a specific type of gut bacteria, Bifidobacterium, which has been linked to improved cognitive function in past studies.
This research is exciting, but not all supplements are created equal.
The supplement industry is flooded with low-quality products stuffed with fillers, artificial additives, and ineffective doses. Some “prebiotic” powders are loaded with sugar or synthetic ingredients that do more harm than good!
When choosing a supplement, look for pure, high-quality inulin or FOS with no unnecessary fillers. Third-party testing and certifications (such as NSF or USP) can help ensure you’re getting a product that actually delivers what it promises.
This study is one more piece of evidence showing that cognitive decline isn’t just a brain issue—it’s a gut issue, too.
