A Simple “Scoop” to Boost Your Brain?
You’re looking for your glasses. Only to realize they’ve been perched on your head the entire time.
Forgetfulness like this might feel like a harmless sign of aging, but for some, it could signal the early stages of mild cognitive impairment (MCI)—a condition that bridges the gap between normal aging and more serious cognitive decline.
Thankfully, new research is now offering hope in an unlikely form…
Enriched whey protein powder.
A year-long study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that this supplement, combined with milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), taurine, and B vitamins, could support cognitive health and even slow the transition to Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers from BYHEALTH Institute of Nutrition & Health and Wuhan University revealed that daily supplementation with this enriched whey protein significantly improved cognitive function in older adults with MCI.
Key ingredients like MFGM, taurine, and B vitamins worked synergistically to:
- Lower homocysteine levels, which are linked to dementia risk.
- Support nerve membranes, enhancing communication between brain cells.
- Promote gut health via the gut-brain axis, potentially improving brain function through a healthier microbiome.
In the double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 107 adults aged 55-80 with MCI were given 15g of enriched whey protein daily. Here’s what researchers found after 12 months:
- Improved Cognitive Function: The intervention group showed a 3.23-point increase in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score, compared to just 1.42 points in the placebo group.
- Better Secondary Outcomes: Tests like the digit symbol substitution test showed notable improvement in cognitive speed and accuracy.
- Enhanced Muscle Mass: Protein supplementation improved BMI and muscle mass, which are associated with better cognitive function.
Cognitive decline can feel like an inevitable part of aging, but this study suggests otherwise. The findings emphasize the importance of nutrition—not just for brain health but for overall physical wellness.
By addressing sarcopenia (muscle loss), enriched whey protein may offer a dual benefit for mind and body.
While the results are promising, researchers stress that more long-term studies are needed. Still, this trial underscores the potential of targeted nutritional interventions for supporting cognitive health.
Want to give your brain a boost? It might just be time to take a closer look at your diet—starting with a scoop of enriched whey protein.
