Silent Alarms Your Body Might Be Sounding About Cancer
When it comes to cancer, early detection can make all the difference.
After heart disease, cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the United States.
But here’s the good news: catching and treating cancer early can significantly improve your outlook.
The challenge? Many early signs of cancer are easy to overlook or dismiss as something less serious.
To help you stay vigilant about your health, we’ve compiled a list of 20 commonly ignored signs that could potentially indicate cancer.
Remember, having one or more of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer, but they’re worth discussing with your doctor.
- Bone Pain: Whether it’s a shooting pain or a dull ache, unexplained bone pain could be a sign of bone cancer. Watch for associated swelling or unexplained fractures.
- Unusual Skin Rashes: Tiny red, purple, or brown spots called petechiae could indicate leukemia, a cancer of the blood.
- Eye Pain or Vision Changes: Pain in or around the eyes, seeing shadows or flashes of light, blurred vision, or vision loss could signal eye cancer.
- New or Changing Headache Patterns: Unusual new patterns of headaches or an increase in severity might be a sign of a brain tumor.
- Persistent Heartburn: Frequent heartburn or constant low-level chest pain after eating could indicate esophageal or stomach cancer.
- Abnormal Menstrual Bleeding: Unusually heavy or painful periods, or bleeding between periods, might be a sign of endometrial cancer.
- Nipple Changes: A flattened, inverted, or sideways-turning nipple could be an early sign of breast cancer.
- Breast Skin Changes: Breasts that appear red or purplish, feel hot, swollen, or irritated might signal inflammatory breast cancer.
- Difficulty Swallowing: This could be an early sign of throat cancer or even lung cancer.
- Persistent Hoarseness: A consistently hoarse voice or feeling of pressure on the throat might indicate thyroid cancer.
- Severe Abdominal Pain: While occasional stomach upset is normal, severe cramping or abdominal pain could be a sign of colorectal cancer.
- Wheezing or Shortness of Breath: Difficulty catching your breath could be an early sign of lung cancer or thyroid cancer.
- Excessive Gas or Bloating: While often harmless, these symptoms could potentially signal ovarian or colon cancers.
- Persistent Bowel Changes: Ongoing constipation, diarrhea, or changes in stool consistency lasting more than a few days warrant a discussion about colorectal cancer.
- Urination Difficulties: Trouble urinating or being unable to go despite having the urge could be an early sign of prostate cancer in men.
- Erectile Dysfunction: As prostate cancer progresses, men might experience difficulty getting or sustaining an erection.
- Extreme Fatigue: While different from normal tiredness, extreme fatigue or weakness could be a sign of various cancers, including leukemia.
- Frequent High Fevers: Recurring high temperatures might indicate leukemia, which impacts the body’s ability to fight infections.
- Nail Changes: A brown or black streak or dot under a fingernail could signal subungual melanoma, a type of skin cancer.
- Unexplained Weight Loss: Losing weight without trying could be a sign of various cancers, particularly if accompanied by other symptoms.
It’s crucial to remember that many of these symptoms can be caused by less serious conditions.
However, if you experience any of these signs persistently or in combination, it’s worth discussing them with your healthcare provider. Early detection remains one of our most powerful tools in the fight against cancer.
