Food “trend” does wonders for your GUT
Honestly, I’m not big into “trends” …
But if it’s something that can boost your health? Well, then I’ll listen!
Today, I’m pulling back the curtain behind a food “trend” that not only tastes delicious… but can also supercharge your GUT HEALTH.
Even I’ll admit… this is TOTALLY worth the hype!
Avocados. It’s a delicious, healthy, fat-rich fruit (yes, it’s a fruit—not a veggie) that seems to be all the rage these days is actually great for your gut health.
Researchers from the University of Illinois say adding avocados to just one meal a day can improve the diversity of microbes in the gut.
The researchers found that people who ate avocados daily had a greater abundance of gut microbes that break down fiber and produce metabolites—compounds that support gut health.
During the 12-week study, the research team examined a group of adults that were considered obese or overweight. Half the group was given an avocado at one meal… the other half was not.
It turns out that the ‘avocado group’ consumed slightly more calories… BUT more fat left their body through their stool.
Avocados also reduced the amount of bile acids found in the gut. And the LESS bile acids, the HEALTHIER your gut!
Avocados are also packed with soluble fiber and monounsaturated fat… both of which are gut-boosting.
If you ask me how I like to get my daily intake of avocados, I’d recommend a simple piece of avocado toast.
Simply toast some heart-healthy bread (like Ezekiel bread), and instead of spreading it with butter… spread it with avocado.
Top it with your favorite salsa (or even a poached egg), and you have yourself a delicious, high-fiber breakfast!
You can also utilize avocado oil supplements as an alternative to the real deal. These can be found in most health food stores.
Just remember, while avocados are packed with nutrients, they are also calorie-dense. So just be sure to stick to ONE avocado per day.
And if you do go the supplement route, stick to the recommended dosage on the product label.
Finally, you should also be supplementing your gut health with a high-quality probiotic.
To optimal gut health,
Sarah Reagan
