Well, this concept is finally catching on as food medicine—a practice of “prescribing” fruits and vegetables as a mechanism for improving heart health.

And (file this under the category of “I never expected this”) now even major healthcare providers are providing at-risk patients electronic cards or vouchers to purchase free or discounted produce at grocery stores and farmers’ markets as a way to take advantage of this healthy “prescription.”

Folks, I’m all for this!

Currently, most food medicine prescriptions are designed to help combat food insecurity—a growing problem of not having access to sufficient food, or food of an adequate quality, to meet one’s basic needs.

Food insecurity is a big problem with low-income families, and many elderly people, too.

To make matters worse, food insecurity forces people to choose between eating junk or healthy foods based on cost—which unfortunately leads many people to choose poor-quality foods.

But food medicine prescriptions are a valuable tool to combat this.

If this is something you struggle with, consider talking about it with your health care provider.

In the meantime, maintaining a diet of fruit, vegetables (and MEAT) is one of the single best ways to fight chronic disease and inflammation.

Unfortunately, the typical Western diet of sugar and processed carbs only contributes to countless health ailments.
