Are you MISSING OUT on this ‘memory mineral’?
Friend, the mainstream will tell you that cognitive impairment occurs because something is WRONG with your brain…
Either because of bad GENETICS… or just bad LUCK!
But the truth could be far SIMPLER… and EASIER to address.
Because the culprit behind memory loss could be bad NUTRITION!
One of the FIRST potential root causes that should be ruled out is a nutritional deficiency…
Because there’s one micronutrient in particular that we don’t need MUCH of…
Yet some folks STILL aren’t getting enough!
And coming up short could contribute to cognitive decline.
I recently shared with you how zinc is a KEY element of an anti-inflammatory diet that could help keep your brain from SHRINKING as you age.
But zinc has got even MORE going for it when it comes to supporting cognitive health.
This mineral is CRUCIAL to central nervous system function…
And research suggests that zinc has a DIRECT effect on the “memory center” of the brain, a.k.a. the hippocampus. In fact, zinc can be found in hippocampal tissue!
But certain factors could DRAIN you of your zinc supply…
Like eating a diet full of phytates (found in legumes, nuts, and seeds)…
And taking certain drugs, including some diuretics and antibiotics.
Folks with a DEFICIENCY in it could show signs of cognitive dysfunction…
But fortunately, studies show that adding it back into the diet could help IMPROVE cognition.
In a 2017 animal study, supplementing rats’ diets with zinc was linked to improvements in… long-term and short-term recognition memory (like remembering treats)
spatial memory (like being able to find their way through a maze).
The theory is that zinc may also act as an antioxidant… BEATING BACK oxidative stress in the brain…
As well as help increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)… which is like fertilizer for your brain cells.
Zinc may also help keep excess copper from accumulating in the brain… which sometimes happens in Alzheimer’s patients.
And finally, zinc is usually associated with promoting mitochondrial health… which helps MAXIMIZE cellular energy in your brain…
And helping with DNA repair.
The tricky part is getting the RIGHT amount of zinc. See, it’s considered a TRACE element… which means you don’t need A LOT of it.
And it IS possible to get too much of it. In fact, EXCESS zinc could also cause memory loss!
That’s why you should be CAUTIOUS taking zinc supplements… and stick to a LOW DOSE.
You can also get zinc from your diet by eating animal proteins — especially lamb, beef, duck, and shellfish (like oysters).
