GMO ‘labeling’, courtesy of the USDA and Monsanto!
If you needed any more proof that the USDA is in Monsanto’s pocket… look no further.
I guess those agency officials were burning the midnight oil trying to come up with a sneaky way to fulfill the congressional mandate to label GMO food… but not!
You have to give them credit, though. It’s a whale of a job that took a lot of thinking and devious creativity.
And if you’re not “in the know” and this plan goes forward, you could be tricked into buying foods that you ordinarily wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole.
When you hear what’s going on, I’m sure you’ll be as shocked and disturbed as I am. And while we all know how these federal agencies brown-nose corporate interests, this one is over the top.
Luckily, there’s still a chance to put the brakes on this proposal. But you’ll need to act quickly… before it’s too late.
Don’t worry, be happy!
How is it that over 60 other countries have managed to properly label genetically modified foods, but when the USDA finally gets around to doing it, it comes up with a smiley face?
No, really.
Finally unveiling what’s been in the works for years (and finally mandated by Congress in 2016), the USDA has just revealed its proposed GMO-labeling icons.
There are three versions: one that looks like a smiling sun, one face that appears to be winking at us, and the third that simply says “BE” (for bio-engineered) in the middle with the sun and a plant behind it.
Monsanto must be very proud of the USDA for such fine work! Because it looks like it’s straight out of the Frankenfood playbook!
Missing, of course, are the very words that indicate exactly what those foods contain: and that’s genetically modified ingredients. Call them GM or GMO (for genetically modified organisms), but for heaven sakes, don’t suddenly swoop in with some industry term that lots of shoppers aren’t familiar with.
George Kimbrell with the Center for Food Safety calls the “little smiley face” and BE wording “biotech propaganda.” And that’s exactly what it is.
And another crafty plan we told you about two years ago is still on the table, and the idea is to provide shoppers with a high-tech QR code that needs to be scanned with a smartphone in order for a consumer to see if a product’s ingredients have been genetically modified.
Look, I know plenty of people who can’t even answer their phones while they’re ringing, let alone begin scanning food items when they’re trying to make a quick shopping trip!
The whole idea behind GMO labeling was to provide shoppers a quick way to know what’s been made with those Frankenfoods and what hasn’t. But the powers that be weren’t about to let that happen.
And it’s not just Monsanto… but its minions as well. The Grocery Manufacturers Association, for example, pitched in for the “cause” to the tune of $400 million several years ago in support of this exact kind of labeling scheme.
This whole thing is merely an attempt to deceive on a massive scale.
But that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing we can do!
First, it’s important that you make a comment on this so-called GMO labeling with the USDA, especially on the sneaky way it’s calling these foods “BE.” To do that, you’ll need to go to federalregister.gov and put this number into the search box: 83 FR 19860. Click on the first link, and you’ll see a green button that says “submit a comment.”
Do it soon, as the comment period closed on July 3.
The next thing you can do is implement your own kind of “labeling,” which will tell you what foods that contain GMO ingredients to avoid.
In a nutshell, that means buying either organic products or ones that have the “Non-GMO Project” label on them (there are tens of thousands).
If you feel like reading ingredient labels, look for – and put back on the shelf – any processed products that contain the big four GMO Franken-ingredients: non-organic corn, soy, canola (the oils, too!), and sugar from sugar beets (rather than cane sugar).
The more people who do this, the more we’ll be able to fight back against the biotech bullies who are trying every way they can to take over America’s food supply.
