Safely boosting testosterone levels
Last Thursday I sent you an e-Alert about the controversy surrounding testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for the treatment of andropause – also known as male menopause (“Who’s on First?” 8/22/02). Over the weekend I received a number of e-mails in response to that topic, most of them asking the same question: “What are the safe and natural ways to boost testosterone levels?”
There are several options, but one quick answer: tribulus terrestris.
Tribulus terrestris is an herb that grows in tropical and moderate areas throughout the world. Also known as “puncture vine,” tribulus has been used to enhance strength and sexual performance for thousands of years in China, India and Europe. Although it contains no hormones, it is rich in phytochemicals, called steroidal saponins that stimulate the endocrine system.
In men, tribulus triggers the secretion of leutinizing hormone, which in turn stimulates the gonads to produce more testosterone. In one study of men age 28-45, it increased testosterone levels by as much as 30 percent over a five-day period. Other studies using tribulus terrestris have shown an increase in sperm production and motility, as well as increased sexual activity.
Tribulus terrestris supplements are fairly common so you can probably find one at your local health food store. For some time now HSI has highly recommended a unique and very effective tribulus formulation called Trilovin 250.
