Why the ‘catch of the day’ might just chase the blues away
What’s your favorite comfort food?
Is it macaroni and cheese? A glazed doughnut? Or maybe a pint of Ben & Jerry’s?
Actually, if you’re a woman, the best comfort food out there might just be …seafood!
That was the conclusion of researchers from the Menzies Research Institute in Australia who studied the dietary habits of more than 1,400 men and women over a five-year period.
The study found that eating fish or shellfish at least twice a week reduced the risk of depression by 25 percent. But only in women.
A follow-up study also found that each additional weekly serving of fish tended to make a woman 6 percent less likely to become depressed.
Researchers believe the uplifted mood may be the result of high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in fish that combine with female sex hormones to fight depression.
But if you guys feel cheated by not getting the same benefits, keep in mind that the fatty acids found in oily kinds of fish are good for brain health.
And that may give you an edge when you’re trying to translate what your better half is saying!
