I’m sure you’ve experienced sticker shock now and then.

You might call this a case of “sticker electrocution.”

It comes from Dr. Spreen. He was surprised to find a two-page ad for fish oil in the front of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Fish oil? Advertised in JAMA?

Ah, but there’s a catch.

This “fish oil” is actually a synthetic EPA – an omega-3 fatty acid. And because it’s synthetic, it’s an FDA-approved prescription drug.

After he told me about the ad, I received this follow up message…

“You better be sitting down…

“I spoke personally with two pharmacists, and asked what a patient would pay for the omega-3 (which isn’t even two omega-3s, just EPA alone).

“They come in a bottle of 120 capsules of 1 gram each (pretty typical).

“Now, forget what the patient pays for a bottle… What do you think the PHARMACIST pays for one bottle?

“Bear in mind, now, that you take 4 of these capsules/day, so this is a one-month supply only…

“Are you ready?

“The pharmacist pays $178 for 120 caps…He said the LEAST any pharmacist would let them go for would be around $200 PER BOTTLE.

“That’s $6.67 per DAY for a not-very-high dose of just EPA!

Virtually all fish oil supplements combine EPA and DHA. And even in high potency, they’re a fraction of the cost of this new “drug.”

The sad thing is that many doctors who once dismissed supplement use will prescribe this stuff. And patients will go along for the ride since insurance or Medicare will cover most of the cost.

I know he says he won’t make any changes to his precious Obamacare, but maybe the president should consider covering a $19.95 bottle of high-quality fish oil instead.

Better quality, better results, less money.

Nah…that doesn’t sound like something our government could ever agree on!
