We have a new all-time low in the sordid history of drugs
I believe we have a new all-time low in the sordid history of drugs.
It’s no secret that the federal government helps fund drug development research. The New York Times recently highlighted one eye-popping example.
Late last year, the FDA approved Xeljanz. It’s a new rheumatoid arthritis drug from Pfizer. As the Times puts it, Xeljanz had its start in a federal lab. That’s why more than one congressman wants to know why the drug will cost a staggering $2,055 per month.
More than $24,000 per year!
Of course, many RA patients are seniors. So Medicare will be footing a huge portion of that bill.
You don’t need a degree in accounting to figure this one out. Government dollars help develop the drug. Government dollars help patients purchase the drug. And Pfizer has a potential blockbuster.
Could it get any worse?
Absolutely!
Xeljanz already has a black box warning. In tests, it was associated with increased risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis and lymphoma.
Potentially dangerous. Expensive. Largely paid for with our tax dollars.
Do you get the feeling we’re being robbed?
