Lupus can’t be cured, but one vitamin can bring significant relief
Recently, an HSI member named Harvey wrote with this simple question… “Can lupus be cured?”
The short answer is, “No.” With one caveat.
Some drugs prompt drug-induced lupus. In most of these cases, lupus symptoms disappear when the patient stops taking the drug.
With other forms of lupus, there’s a Catch-22. And every lupus patient needs to know about this.
Lupus causes inflammation. Vitamin D calms inflammation. Unfortunately, the best source of D — direct sun exposure — aggravates lupus symptoms. So doctors tell their patients to stay out of the sun. And they end up avoiding the vitamin they desperately need.
It’s no surprise that several studies have shown lupus patients to be D deficient.
So if Harvey, or someone he cares about, has lupus, he probably needs generous vitamin D supplementation daily.
It’s not a cure. But it’s essential for care.
