“Fresh food.” That has a healthy sound to it, doesn’t it?

At least The New York Times thinks so. In a recent article, the Times tells us that 7-11 stores are shifting focus to “healthier food options.”

Healthier? Really? Healthier than what? Slurpees and Doritos?

Actually, you can now find carrots at 7-11. And bananas. And grapes and celery. You might have to search for them, but they really are there.

But for 7-11, the phrase “fresh food” covers a VAST spectrum of food items.

For instance, the Times notes that much of the fresh food “innovation” is limited to a variety of hot dogs.

Wow. Way to innovate, 7-11!

One 7-11 store owner says his best selling fresh food item is Yoplait Parfait with fresh berries and granola.

Hmmm. That SOUNDS healthy. But it contains nearly as much sugar as two Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. And more carbs.

The fresh food manager for 7-11 notes that there are definitely customers who want healthy options. But… “Minidoughnuts are doing very well.”

I’ll bet!

Obviously, we haven’t reached the day when you walk into a 7-11 and mistake it for a Whole Foods. Not quite yet.
