Oil Power

Another olive oil study has demonstrated how consumption of the oil promotes healthy hearts.

Researchers at the University of Barcelona recruited more than 150 men to test the effects of three similar types of olive oil on blood pressure. All of the subjects were from European countries: Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Subjects were divided into three groups and asked to consume one of the three olive oils, 25 milliliters per day for three weeks. Through two additional phases of the study, each subject consumed the same amounts of each type of olive oil for a total of nine weeks.

Results were divided along regional lines. Men from non-Mediterranean countries lowered their systolic blood pressure by three percent overall. No change in blood pressure was noted in the men from Spain or Italy.

This study provides further evidence of the way olive oil benefits the cardiovascular system. You can use this link to the e-Alert “Extra Special” (9/26/06) for details about choosing the best type of olive oil. http://www.hsionline.com/ealerts/ea200609/ea20060926a.html
