Fountain of Health Update

In the e-Alert “Fountain of Health” (11/2/06), I told you about studies that have shown how supplemental DHEA (the so-called anti-aging hormone) may help relieve menopausal symptoms, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce depression.

But because DHEA is a hormone, its use should be closely monitored by a medical professional. In fact, HSI panelist Martin Milner, N.D., recommends that those who take DHEA should have their salivary hormone levels checked at least once every six months.

Why the caution? Here’s one reason, from an HSI member named Joan:

“I read with interest both of your articles regarding DHEA and there is a potential side effect that should be mentioned. In both men and women, supplementing with DHEA can cause hair loss. I personally know one woman and 2 men who were supplementing with 25mg/day doses for several months and lost an excessive amount of hair. DHEA can alter testosterone levels and increase DHT and MPB/FPHL. Your readers should be warned about this potentially disturbing side effect.”

Good note, Joan. And about those acronyms: DHT is dihydrotestosterone, a hormone known to play a role in MPB (male pattern baldness) and FPHL (female pattern hair loss). In some cases, dosage adjustment can address DHEA side effects.

Meet the Health Sciences Institute

The Health Sciences Institute (HSI) is an independent organization established in 1998. We’re dedicated to uncovering and researching the most urgent advances in modern underground medicine. Things you WON’T hear about in the mainstream.

Whether they come from a laboratory in Malaysia, a clinic in South America, or a university in Germany, our goal is to bring the treatments that work directly to the people who need them. We alert our Members to exciting breakthroughs in medicine, show them exactly where to go to learn more, and help them understand how they and their families can benefit from these powerful discoveries.
