As I’ve mentioned many times, blood sugar control is one of the primary essentials to good health, especially as we reach our later years.

But avoiding type 2 diabetes is just part of the picture.

New clinical practice guidelines from the Endocrine Society, underline the importance of avoiding dietary and lifestyle choices that are known to boost glycemic levels and increase insulin resistance.

Most of the new guidelines concern technical procedures for doctors and hospital personnel. But this one sentence from the Endocrine Society announcement jumps out as an important warning to every one of us…

“Hyperglycemia is associated with prolonged hospital stay, increased incidence of infections and death in non-critically ill hospitalized patients.”

That’s a pretty clear-cut warning.

And keep in mind that hyperglycemia often occurs in non-diabetics, so don’t think you’re off the hook just because you haven’t been diagnosed as pre-diabetic or type 2 diabetic.
