Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
This Week In The HSI Healthier Talk Community
If there’s no way around it – if a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) must be used – what nutrients might minimize the potential problems (which include liver and kidney impairment as well as gastrointestinal bleeding)?
That’s the dilemma presented by an HSI member named Harry in a Healthier Talk community thread titled “NSAID/nutritional support.”
Harry: “A cousin of mine is going to start a two-week trial of Voltaren (a prescription NSAID) to treat a case of bursitis. It’s been made clear to me that she isn’t open to using an alternative to the drug but would be willing to take some supplements to counter some of the potential side-effects. After doing some research, this is what I’ve come up with:
- extra vitamin C may be helpful – countering depletion
- extra folic acid may also be helpful – countering depletion
- upping the consumption of vitamin K rich foods seems worthwhile – lessening the risk of bleeding
- supplementing with whey protein and/or glutamine may help protect the GI tract
- DGL [de-glycerrhizinated licorice] may also protect the stomach lining
- sublingual B-12 – shown to help alleviate symptoms by an unknown mechanism (usually administered by injection)
“Any other suggestions?”
Rosnor: “Harry, Two things I’ve seen mentioned for this are Colostrum, and Butterbur, which might be worth you looking into. Also, apparently Cayenne is sometimes used to good effect, although I don’t think I would try this. It might be worth also considering Slippery Elm root, and Marshmallow.”
JonB: “You could also look at MSM. [MSM is an organic sulfur supplement that may reduce inflammation and promote the general health of cells.] We have in NZ a number of different types of MSM, some in caps and powders. It would depend on the type and concentration. I would suggest a naturopath’s advice.”
