This Week In The HSI Healthier Talk Community

Think all toothpastes are pretty much the same? Not so, according to HSI members who have started a Healthier Talk community forum thread titled “Why you should not use commercial toothpaste !”

A member who calls himself “The Oaf” starts things off: “I switched to those new fangled ‘health’ toothpaste coming out. It has baking soda in it and I remember the box saying we do NOT PUT FLOURIDE in our toothpaste, with some kind of reasonable explanation why.

“I thought it was weird to say that, since all the big guys say toothpaste without fluoride is asking for rotten teeth. WELL GUESS WHAT??? I notice all my PLAQUE IS GONE!!! Never happened before. Same motorized toothbrush, same guy brushing, same motion. So how do you like that? Seems using commercial toothpaste does nothing.”

Chris: “I sometimes use ToothSoap or a paste by The Natural Dentist. I was told that many commercial pastes/gels have glycerin in them and it is very hard to rinse off the teeth and makes it difficult for them to re-mineralize. Ever notice that is it a pain to rinse off of the basin when you drop there some while brushing?”

djt: “I’ve been using soap for the last year. I have a summary of the book by the chemist who first explained the dangers of glycerin use and how it interferes with calcium absorption. Besides that, commercial fluoride is an abomination linked to enzyme destruction, including those that bind the teeth to the gums. Naturally occurring fluoride in ground water, in balance with other naturally occurring minerals is another matter.”

Michael: “A number of researchers consider gum disease to be a greater risk factor for heart disease than smoking. Apparently, the inflammation caused by bacteria in gums affects the heart. By virtue of fluoride’s stimulation of G-proteins, fluoride exacerbates gum disease and thereby contributes to heart disease.”

Gideon: “Look ma! No plaque. Well at least a lot less. I have always had a major problem with plaque build up behind my bottom front teeth. This required my dentist to get out her sledgehammer and cold chisels to break it loose. Although from what she said this is quite common and credits it to the location of the saliva glands.

“Well after my last visit six months ago I switched toothpastes. I gave up my store brand, which I thought was fluoride free until I read the very tiny small print. I decided to try making my own. Which is nothing more then baking soda with just enough hydrogen peroxide added to turn it into a paste.

“WOW! Does this stuff work! Plus it is dirt cheep. After three months I noticed that there was very little plaque build up. Today’s cleaning proved it; she just zipped right though with no problems.”

This is a fairly long thread with many more tips from members about tooth and gum care. The tread appears in the General Health Topics forum.
