Can the oil of a Hawaiian nut relieve psoriasis symptoms?
Psoriasis? Try the oil of the kukui nut.
That’s a tip from an HSI member named Don who writes: “If you want to save the lives of people with psoriasis, tell
them about kukui nut oil from Hawaii. A number of years ago I had psoriasis bad enough that my scratching brought
blood…tried kukui nut oil and in a month the psoriasis was gone completely.”
It appears that Don is not the only one who’s had success in treating psoriasis with this exotic oil. In fact, there was enough anecdotal evidence to launch a study by the University of Hawaii in 2003.
For 12 weeks, 30 adults with mild, stable plaque psoriasis used either kukui nut oil or a placebo that consisted of
only mineral oil. Overall, psoriasis symptoms improved, but there was no significant difference in the improvements
reported by both groups.
So is the placebo effect at work here? Maybe. But because there was improvement with kukui nut oil, the UH team
stresses that the effectiveness of the oil cannot be dismissed without a larger study.
You can find a good deal of information about kukui nut oil online, including this: The oil contains linolenic fatty acids, vitamins A, C, and E, and has been used by Hawaiians for many years to treat sunburn and dry skin.
Talk to your doctor before using kukui nut oil to treat psoriasis.
