Swollen fingers. Aching knees. Stiff joints that seem to lock up overnight.

For millions of Americans living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the pain isn’t just annoying—it can slowly deform joints and rob people of their independence.

The standard treatment is often methotrexate… a drug that comes with a long list of warnings including liver damage, nausea, fatigue, and the need for regular blood monitoring.

But what if there was a way to calm the inflammation driving rheumatoid arthritis without forcing the rest of your body to pay the price?

Researchers recently stumbled onto a surprising possibility…

It’s an ancient root we discussed not long ago for helping protect against H. pylori—the stomach bacteria linked to ulcers and cancer.

But now scientists are discovering it may have an entirely different talent.

In fact, in new research, it performed so well that some are comparing its effects to one of the most commonly prescribed arthritis drugs in the world.

And it appears to attack arthritis at the source rather than simply masking symptoms.

The compound comes from licorice root.

Not candy-store licorice, but a concentrated medicinal extract researchers call liquiritigenin (LIQ).

In a new study published in the journal Pharmaceuticals, scientists tested LIQ in arthritic rats and human joint cells designed to mimic rheumatoid arthritis.

Animals receiving the licorice compound developed less severe arthritis symptoms over time.

Their joints showed less swelling, stiffness, and visible deformity.

But the real surprise came when researchers looked inside the joints.

Compared to untreated animals, the licorice compound helped protect cartilage and bone from destruction—one of the hallmarks of rheumatoid arthritis.

Joint imaging revealed healthier structures and less tissue damage.

Even more impressive, LIQ shut down two powerful inflammatory messengers called IL-1β and IL-18.

Think of these as inflammatory arsonists. Once activated, they keep pouring fuel onto the fire inside your joints.

The licorice compound didn’t just dampen the flames—it appeared to cut off the fuel supply.

Researchers also found it blocked the abnormal behavior of the aggressive joint cells that drive rheumatoid arthritis. These rogue cells normally multiply, spread, and invade surrounding tissue like weeds taking over a garden.

LIQ slowed all three processes.

At the same time, it reduced harmful oxidative stress—essentially the biological rusting process that accelerates inflammation and tissue destruction.

Now compare that to methotrexate.

Methotrexate remains one of the most effective RA medications available, but many patients struggle with side effects or require ongoing liver monitoring.

In this study, the licorice compound produced comparable anti-inflammatory benefits in the experimental models without signs of toxicity.

This points to something HSI readers know well: Nature often works on multiple pathways at once.

Instead of targeting a single symptom, compounds like licorice appear to influence inflammation, oxidative stress, tissue protection, and cellular behavior simultaneously.

If you’d like to explore licorice yourself, look for high-quality organic licorice root extracts online. One option currently sells for roughly $15 per bottle—less than the cost of many prescription co-pays.

When it comes to arthritis, the real goal isn’t just feeling better today.

It’s protecting the joints you’ll need tomorrow.

Meet the Health Sciences Institute

The Health Sciences Institute (HSI) is an independent organization established in 1998. We’re dedicated to uncovering and researching the most urgent advances in modern underground medicine. Things you WON’T hear about in the mainstream.

Whether they come from a laboratory in Malaysia, a clinic in South America, or a university in Germany, our goal is to bring the treatments that work directly to the people who need them. We alert our Members to exciting breakthroughs in medicine, show them exactly where to go to learn more, and help them understand how they and their families can benefit from these powerful discoveries.
