You’re at a summer cookout… sunshine, chatter, the scent of hot dogs sizzling on the grill.

Now picture this: That one hot dog could raise your risk of type 2 diabetes by 30% and colorectal cancer by 26%.

Not so nostalgic anymore, right?

A major new study, published in Nature Medicine, just delivered the harsh truth: Even small daily servings of processed meats—like hot dogs, bacon, or sausage—as well as sugary drinks and trans fats, are strongly linked to chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

And for our readers who’ve been hearing about the dangers of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) for years… this is the smoking gun.

The researchers analyzed over 60 large-scale studies, involving hundreds of thousands of people.

What they found was chilling:

  • Just 1 hot dog per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 11% and colorectal cancer by 7%
  • A 12-ounce soda per day raised diabetes risk by 8% and heart disease risk by 2%
  • Even small amounts of trans fats—found in cookies, pastries, chips—were tied to higher rates of heart disease

And these are conservative estimates. Some experts believe the real risks may be far greater.

Why? Because these foods fuel inflammation, disrupt hormone balance, and crowd out nutrient-rich foods your body actually needs to heal and defend itself.

One of the lead researchers put it plainly: There is no safe level of processed meat.

Yet, the average American eats more than 70 pounds of processed meat a year.

It’s easy to see how we got here. These foods are cheap, tasty, and everywhere. But they come with a high price—especially as we age and our bodies become more sensitive to metabolic damage.

The good news? You don’t have to give up flavor or tradition. You just need a few smart swaps:

  • Swap store-bought cookies for homemade almond-date bites
  • Ditch sugary soda for sparkling water with a splash of real juice
  • Replace hot dogs with grilled veggie skewers or grass-fed meat alternatives
  • Check labels and skip products with hydrogenated oils or “natural flavorings”—those are UPF red flags

And if your kids or grandkids are hooked on these foods? Forward this to them. The earlier they swap out these habits, the better their health—and future.

Because whether you’re 65 or 25… what you eat today shapes your health tomorrow.

To shaping your health for tomorrow and years to come,
