It’s the middle of January. And if you’ve been trying to eat healthier or make better choices, here’s a fresh reason to stick to it.

A new study shows that even small tweaks, like adding more calcium-rich foods to your diet, may reduce your risk of colon cancer.

And this is a health benefit worth every effort…

Colorectal cancer, commonly known as bowel cancer, is one of the most diagnosed cancers worldwide.

In 2022 alone, nearly 1.9 million people received the life-altering diagnosis. While lifestyle changes like regular screenings, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising have long been known to reduce cancer risk, this new study adds another tool to the prevention arsenal: calcium.

Researchers from Oxford University analyzed 16 years of data from over 542,000 women as part of the Million Women Study. Their findings? Consuming an additional 300 milligrams of calcium daily—roughly the amount in one glass of milk—was associated with a 17% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

This protective effect was linked specifically to calcium-rich dairy products, including:

  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Dairy nutrients like riboflavin, magnesium, and potassium

While these foods offered a significant protective benefit, the study emphasized moderation and balance.

On the flip side, the study highlighted the well-known risks of alcohol and red or processed meats. For example:

  • Alcohol: Just one large glass of wine (20 grams of alcohol) increased the risk of colorectal cancer by 15%.
  • Red and Processed Meats: An additional 30 grams per day (about one sausage link) raised cancer risk by 8%.

These findings reinforce the importance of minimizing these items in your diet, particularly as you age.

Dr. Lisa Wilde of Bowel Cancer UK recommends making small, sustainable changes:

  • Add More Fiber: Include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables in your meals.
  • Moderate Red Meat: Swap it for plant-based proteins or leaner cuts.
  • Limit Alcohol: Save it for special occasions rather than daily consumption.
  • Stay Active: Regular physical activity can lower cancer risk and improve overall health.

While cancer prevention involves multiple factors, this study shows that simple changes, like drinking a daily glass of milk or adding yogurt to your diet, can make a real difference.

For seniors, focusing on nutrition and lifestyle adjustments may not only lower the risk of colon cancer but improve overall well-being.

As Dr. Nilesh Vora puts it, “Dietary habits have changed over the years, and this could be why we’re seeing a rise in colon cancer cases, especially in younger people.”

So, if you’ve been looking for a reason to stick to your resolutions or revamp your diet, let this be your motivation. Because sometimes, the smallest changes have the most significant impact.

To staying healthy and strong—one glass of milk at a time,
