An Unexpected Menopause Ally Hiding in Your Fridge?
Picture this: you’re going about your day, minding your own business, when suddenly, a wave of heat crashes over you like a tidal wave. Your face flushes, your heart races, and you feel like you might just melt into a puddle right there on the spot.
Or maybe you’re trying to drift off to sleep, only to find yourself tossing and turning, your sheets drenched in sweat, your mind racing with thoughts that just won’t quit.
For many women, these are the all-too-familiar hallmarks of menopause—a time of life that can bring a host of miserable symptoms, from hot flashes and night sweats to mood swings and insomnia.
And as if these daily struggles weren’t enough, menopause also brings with it a heightened risk of heart disease, as the body’s natural estrogen levels decline.
But what if there was a simple, natural way to help protect your heart health during this challenging time? What if the key to keeping your blood vessels healthy and your risk of cardiovascular disease low was as close as your refrigerator?
A new randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover clinical trial from The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) suggests that consuming beetroot juice daily may improve blood flow through blood vessels, reducing the risk of heart problems in postmenopausal women.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, recruited 24 women at the postmenopausal stage and had them consume two 2.3-ounce bottles of concentrated beetroot juice at the start of the study, followed by one bottle daily for one week. Each bottle delivered the same level of nitrates as three large beets.
A few weeks later, the participants received beetroot juice from which the nitrate had been removed, serving as a placebo. The researchers used Doppler ultrasound to assess the effect of the beetroot juice on participants’ brachial artery blood flow before and after consumption, and compared the results to the placebo.
The findings were promising: blood flow improved while the participants were consuming their daily nitrate-rich beetroot juice (though the effect faded within 24 hours of drinking their last bottle).
So, what makes beetroot juice such a heart-healthy powerhouse for postmenopausal women?
The answer lies in its high nitrate content. As estrogen levels decrease during menopause, women lose some of the cardioprotective effects of this hormone.
The reduction in estrogen accelerates the development of heart disease risk factors, such as increased LDL cholesterol, vascular stiffening, and high blood pressure.
But consuming nitrate through plants, like beetroot juice, provides a secondary pathway to increase the availability of nitric oxide in the body.
Nitric oxide is a molecule responsible for widening blood vessels to accommodate blood flow and oxygen delivery to organs like the heart. Since estrogen is no longer sufficient to stimulate nitric oxide production naturally after menopause, dietary nitrate can step in to help maintain healthy blood vessel function.
It’s important to note that the type of nitrate matters here. The beneficial nitrates found in beetroot juice and other plant sources are different from the nitrates used as preservatives or additives in animal products.
So, when seeking out heart-healthy nitrates, stick to natural, plant-based sources.
Of course, drinking beetroot juice daily is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to maintaining heart health after menopause.
Regular exercise, a balanced diet, stress management, and working closely with your healthcare provider are all crucial components of a comprehensive heart-health plan.
