Watching a parent or loved one struggle with dementia is a heartbreaking experience.

The confusion, the memory loss, the gradual decline in their ability to perform everyday tasks—it’s a painful reminder of the fragility of our minds as we age.

Perhaps you’ve witnessed your once vibrant mother forgetting the names of her grandchildren, or your father struggling to find his way home from the grocery store.

As you watch their decline, it’s natural to wonder: could this happen to me too?

The good news is that there are steps you can take to boost your odds of maintaining a healthy brain as you age. And one of the simplest and most delicious ways to do so may be sitting right in your kitchen cupboard.

A new study published in the journal JAMA Network Open has found evidence that daily consumption of olive oil may reduce the chances of developing dementia.

Researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed data for more than 90,000 people included in two separate health databases and found that those who consumed at least 7g of olive oil daily (about half a tablespoon) were 28 percent less likely to die from dementia-related ailments compared to those who consumed less.

The study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes the use of olive oil along with legumes, vegetables, nuts, fish, and dairy, may be one of the best ways to promote healthy aging.

But what is it about olive oil specifically that makes it such a brain-boosting powerhouse?

The researchers suggest that the anti-inflammatory properties of olive oil may play a key role in its protective effects against dementia. Inflammation has been linked to a variety of age-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s and other forms of cognitive decline.

By regularly consuming olive oil, you may be helping to inhibit this inflammation and keep your brain healthy.

Interestingly, the study also noted that many of the participants who benefited from daily olive oil consumption had used it to replace less healthy fats in their diets, such as butter, mayonnaise, and other vegetable oils. This suggests that making a simple swap in your cooking and dressing habits could have a significant impact on your brain health over time.

Of course, no single food is a magic bullet against dementia. A healthy brain depends on a variety of factors, including regular exercise, social engagement, and mental stimulation. But incorporating olive oil into your daily diet is a simple and delicious way to give your brain a boost.

And if you’re caring for a parent or loved one with dementia, take heart. While there is no cure for this devastating disease, studies like this one offer hope that we can take steps to protect our own brain health and potentially reduce our risk of developing dementia as we age.

To a healthier, more flavorful future,
