As if diabetes weren’t difficult enough

See, dealing with this diagnosis already means a whole playlist of problem-wrangling. You’ve got the constant needle pricks, carb counting, activity monitoring, blood sugar highs and lows…

It’s a full-time job just to keep levels in check and complications at bay!

But as if that weren’t enough, new research shows diabetes also takes a toll on another area of your health…

Diabetes can also target your pearly whites. We’re talking inflamed gums, cavities spreading like wildfire, and teeth falling out.

Fact is, your mouth is directly in the crosshairs of diabetes. And poor dental health certainly doesn’t do your blood sugar or heart any favors either…

See, uncontrolled blood sugar doesn’t just tax your ticker, eyes, and toes—it also results in high levels of glucose in your spit, which set the breeding ground for nasty bacteria that inflame your gums and gnaw away at the bone in your jaw.

And these issues tend to be worse if your diabetes isn’t well-managed.

But what’s worse is, this relationship seems to go both ways. Just as diabetes promotes dental disasters, raging gum infections also spike blood sugar and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes by pumping inflammation through your system.

So, if you leave severe dental problems untreated, you’re just giving your diabetes more fuel to wreak further havoc! It’s a vicious cycle.

Yet, too few patients (or even docs!) are aware of the connection between diabetes and deteriorating dental health. So gum disease and tooth decay tend to spiral out of control unknowingly.

In fact, surveys show only around half of diabetes patients have gotten information from doctors about protecting their oral health. Even worse, only 30 percent get referrals to dentists for checkups and treatment.

Just like diabetes care teams should include eye docs, foot doctors, and more, you need regular dental care on the roster. And not just cleanings—but extensive checkups to spot brewing issues promptly, plus coordinated treatment plans.

Anything less is asking for trouble!

While bringing healthcare together is an uphill battle, you can take charge of your mouth health starting today with these easy tips:

  • Get thorough dental exams every 3-6 months to stay ahead of lurking threats.
  • Ask your dentist to coordinate treatment with your diabetes care team.
  • Brush gently twice daily and floss once daily to control bacteria behind your teeth.
  • If painful gum swelling, foul tastes or loose teeth arise, seek help ASAP!
