How to DODGE a Looming Heart Attack
Picture clasping your chest as pain wraps torso in a vice-like grip.
Your breaths shorten to panicked gasps while your arm, jaw, and back throb.
Bystanders swarm, uncertainty rising as symptoms mount. Minutes suddenly stretch to a terrifying eternity, life hanging by thinning threads…
That’s the reality when you’re having a heart attack.
Yet too often, there’s no indication that cardiovascular threats are secretly building. That is, until now. (Article continues below).
Heart attacks rank the #1 killer globally—and rates continue to climb. Worryingly, doctors frequently miss high-risk individuals and many who are warned don’t follow preventative protocols.
Knowing who is most at risk proves critical for intervening before it’s too late.
But predictions often rely on risk markers that are infrequently collected and slowly change over time. This fails to capture escalations in the dynamic period right before a heart attack. (For example, going through divorce or a cancer diagnosis can double or even quintuple the chance of a heart attack happening that very week.)
Researchers compared blood samples from over 400 future heart attack patients to over 1500 healthy individuals. They identified 90 biomarkers that shifted statistically, signaling increased risk in the months prior to an attack.
These biomarkers can be detected through routine blood tests. By plugging the results into an online calculator, patients can get their personalized risk of a heart attack within 6 months.
Those at higher risk may then receive preventative lifestyle or medication recommendations from their doctor, potentially averting disaster. These frightening warnings could also motivate positive changes—like quitting smoking.
So keep up with your regular checkups and screenings. Should your risk spike on standard bloodwork, work quickly with your doctor to reduce likelihood of an attack. Attentiveness and prevention keeps your heart happily beating!
