Adaptogens are components found in herbal medicines. They are known to promote well-being and increase resilience to stressors.

They do not PREVENT stress… but studies have found they can improve the way your body responds physically to stress.

If you recall a time you were stressed, you probably experienced certain physical sensations that come with it.

This is actually your body’s stress response—a release of stress hormones that result in physiological changes, like increased heart rate or blood pressure.

You’ve maybe heard this referred to as fight-or-flight response.

This is normal for occasional stress. But, when stress is too overwhelming or happens too often, your internal stress hormones don’t work properly. This can cause your immune response to go HAYWIRE—increasing your risk of both short and long-term illness and disease.

BUT incorporating adaptogens can help.

Adaptogens come in many forms, including teas, capsules, and powders that can be added to foods.

Ashwagandha, maca, and even licorice are all classified as adaptogens. There’s also tulsi (also referred to as “holy basil”) which not only reduces stress, but bolsters your body’s total immune defenses.

Be sure to talk to your doctor before incorporating any adaptogen into your daily routine. And, if you’re feeling heightened, or more consistent, feelings of stress, you should also talk to your doctor.
