It’s time-tested dietary advice that’s been around for decades.

Heck, even your mom probably hammered it into your mind as a kid…

“Eat your FRUITS and VEGETABLES!”

It’s something we ALL know we need to be doing. After all, a daily intake of fruits and vegetables helps keep your ENTIRE body healthy and strong!

But let’s face it… getting the right amount isn’t always easy.

Well my friend, thanks to some new technology, you could get a little extra assistance to ensure you’re not skimping on this essential part of a healthy diet.

You just need your phone!

Here’s a sneak peek at how it works.

Researchers in the United Kingdom recently released a new food tracking app called “SMART 5-A-DAY” that’s designed to help people proactively INCREASE their intake of fruits and vegetables.

The app’s functionality is quite simple.

You just input what fruits and vegetables you’ve eaten after each meal and how much.

The app then converts consumption to correspond with guidelines of five portions of different fruits or vegetables per day.

The app allows you to track your daily consumption over time which can help you record the amount of fruits and vegetables you’re consuming.

The researchers behind the development of SMART 5-A-DAY noted that they hope use of the app helps users’ understanding of how to make smart, healthy changes to their diet.

It should be noted that the currently guidelines listed in the app are based on U.K. dietary guidelines – which are similar to U.S. guidelines.

For more information, do a quick Google search for “SMART 5-A-DAY.” As of now, it’s only available for download on the Google Play Store for Android phones.

Full disclosure, I do not have any sort of affiliation with the app developers. I simply encourage folks to use any worthwhile tools at their disposal that may help them make healthy food choices.

In the meantime, if you need an additional nudge to stock your pantry and fridge with more fruits and veggies, try doing the bulk of your grocery shopping in the outer perimeter of the store. This is where all the healthy stuff lives – and none of the processed junk!

And speaking of a healthy diet, don’t miss this afternoon’s edition of eAlert. I have news on a specific diet that can help preserve your memory. And it’s not a “fad”!

To a healthy diet,

Sarah Reagan
