It feels oh so good at first…

But there’s a good chance you’ll regret it later.

You know, indulging in one of those savory, rich meals that delight your taste buds…

Only for things to take a turn and you suddenly feel that uncomfortable “burning” in your stomach and throat.

For most folks, a big meal (especially during the holidays) can cause heartburn or acid reflux.

Often it goes away on its own. But when things really burn… and on a consistent basis… could be gastroesophageal reflux disease – a.k.a. GERD.

Simply put, GERD is when your stomach acid repeatedly flows back into your esophagus, resulting in that uncomfortable and annoying BURNING sensation.

Unlike the occasional heartburn, GERD keeps coming back.

But before your reach for a bottle of chalky antiacids, I’m going to clue you in on how the juice from a Hindu “holy fruit” can help stop GERD from coming back.

Those of the Hindu faith consider amla (Emblica officinalis) to be “supremely holy.”

In fact, Hindus dedicate an entire holy day to the fruit – known as Amalaka Ekadashi, one of the main celebrations of Holi, the festival of colors.

But it’s more commonly known as Indian gooseberry.

I’ve touched on Indian gooseberry in eAlert before, specifically for its ability to help fight diabetes.

But Indian gooseberry can also do wonders for your digestive system – which we all need a little help with during the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

For starters, multiple animal studies have found that Indian gooseberry acts as an antidiarrheal, prevents muscle spasms in the intestines, and can help heal and thwart stomach ulcers.

But for those cases of severe GERD, human studies have found that Indian gooseberry slows down it’s frequency and severity.

In fact, researchers discovered that taking two 500-mg tablets of amla extract twice daily for 4 weeks led to significant reductions in the severity and frequency of heartburn episodes and overall “regurgitation” (the BURNING).

Indian gooseberry doesn’t eliminate ALL stomach acid (we need some!) … but reduces how much stomach acid seeps back up into your esophagus – equaling LESS heartburn.

Look for Indian gooseberry (or amla) in extract form at your local health food store. But be sure to talk to your doctor about it first – especially if you have a history of GERD.

To ending that burning sensation,
Sarah Reagan
