A pinch of this spice ‘nut’ CALMS digestion in a CHAOTIC belly
We’ve all had those days…
When we’re RUNNING for the nearest toilet…
And asking ourselves, “What did I eat???”
If you’ve experienced occasional digestive UPHEAVAL…
Or you’re looking for new ways to EASE a chronic issue with your digestion…
The answer might be already HIDING in your pantry!
There’s a spice rack staple that’s used in traditional medicinal practices on the other side of the world – but in this country, it’s too often OVERLOOKED!
You might think of nutmeg as a humble baking spice…
But as it turns out, it’s also a digestive tonic!
Technically not a “nut”… but the seed of the fruit from the tropical nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans)… nutmeg is known throughout the East Indies as a flavoring AND as natural medicine.
That’s why it’s so often added to spicy dishes in Indonesia (including its “Spice Islands”) and India…
Because even just a PINCH of it could help beat back digestive issues like gas… bloating… and even poop problems.
This isn’t just a “wives’ tale”…
Because modern-day research CONFIRMS its traditional use in helping to DRY UP diarrhea!
It’s also considered a “carminative”… which means it could help you EXPEL the gas that’s causing cramping! (And, in the end, that could mean LESS flatulence.)
That’s not all…
Because some studies even show the antimicrobial action of nutmeg…
Which includes helping to BEAT BACK H. pylori… the bacterial strain that’s a culprit behind MANY gut issues…
Not the LEAST of which is peptic ulcer.
In a 2019 animal study out of Pakistan, researchers treated ulcer-induced rats with nutmeg extract… and discovered not only that acidity DECREASED…
But also that gastric lesions had been REDUCED by more than 41%.
In Ayurveda, nutmeg is known as “jaiphal” or “jatiphala”… and is often consumed with honey or ghee.
An Indian specialty store may carry nutmeg powder in supplement form.
An Ayurvedic physician could point you in the right direction.
If you’re considering trying nutmeg essential oil… make sure it’s 100% pure and food grade (NOT for aromatherapy or topical use only).
Otherwise, you can look for whole nutmeg and grate your own… or stick with regular ol’ nutmeg from the spice aisle (as long as it comes from a quality maker).
Now, there’s a TRICK to using nutmeg correctly.
You should consume LESS than 1.5 tablespoons of ground nutmeg per sitting – because any more than that could be TOXIC! (In fact, high doses could even be hallucinogenic.)
