Friend, we all got a little thicker around the middle over the past couple of years.

For some, it was from staying home… and moving around a lot less…

While for others, it was more about seeking solace in “comfort foods”… when the world outside felt like a THREAT.

But if you’ve developed a “beer belly” without overindulging in beer…

And getting back on track with your diet and activity levels hasn’t help SHRINK your belly fat back down to a more normal size…

There could be something ELSE at play.

It’s something that PLAGUES way too many Americans…

And what’s at stake here is MUCH more serious than having to take your belt out another notch or two.

Medically, “belly fat” is the accumulation of fat around your middle… a.k.a. abdominal obesity.

And it’s a sign that carrying that extra weight around is putting your health at risk.

Belly fat could put you in the crosshairs for heart disease… diabetes… liver problems… prostate cancer… and even sudden death.

Now, some folks develop belly fat because of hormonal imbalances – like older gals who gain weight during menopause and find themselves with a pot belly (or “menopot,” as they call it).

Too-high levels of the “stress hormone” cortisol could also contribute to a bulging belly.

But there’s another hidden culprit – one that could strike both men and women of any age.

And it’s probably one of the most widespread health problems out there.

I’m talking about lack of sleep.

According to the latest out of the Mayo Clinic, subjects who didn’t get enough sleep had an abdominal fat area that was 9% greater in size than the group that slept sufficiently.

The sleep-deprived group also had an 11% increase in belly fat that specifically surrounded the organs – a.k.a. “visceral fat,” which is one of the most dangerous places for fat to accumulate.

Of course, we all lose SOME sleep every now and then. Even the BEST sleepers have one of those nights when they can’t doze off right away.

But for A THIRD of Americans, those poor sleep habits are routine.

One of the reasons behind the connection between sleep problems and stubborn belly fat is just common sense.

The longer you’re awake… the more food you’re likely to eat.

And studies have also shown that sleep deprivation could also make you feel hungrier… and cause you to consume excess calories the next day.

In this latest study, the subjects who were allowed to sleep only 4 hours a night consumed an extra 300 calories during the day!

But there’s something else going on here.

Too-little sleep could also send your cortisol levels SOARING…

And that could create a vicious cycle that SABOTAGES your future chances of getting restful sleep!

Unfortunately, “making up” for lost sleep in the short-term… like by taking naps… won’t melt your belly fat away.

You’ve got to work on a way of getting a full night’s rest… EVERY night.

In the meantime, there may be other ways of addressing those abdominal fat deposits…

Besides the usual advice of watching what you eat and getting more exercise.

A study last year found that eating 1 avocado daily helped ERASE belly fat over the course of 3 months.

And research out of Korea revealed how very overweight folks could SHRINK their waistlines by 1 inch… simply by consuming the herb gynostemma.

Other options for naturally TORCHING fat include hesperidin… bitter melon… resveratrol… and more.

Whichever route you decide to go, make sure your doc gives you the green light.
