SHORE UP strong bones… and REGROW lost bone… with a ‘bathroom trick’?
We all lose a little bone as we get older…
But older gals are especially in the crosshairs for bone loss that becomes ACCELERATED as time wears on.
In the first 10 years of menopause, women could lose up to HALF of their “long” bone mass!
The more bone you lose… the more DEVASTATING a fall or fracture could become…
Leading to frailty… disability… and even loss of independence.
The only problem?
You can’t SEE or FEEL your bones becoming brittle or thin…
And by the time you take a tumble and BREAK something…
It could be too late.
Fortunately, there’s a simple way to support healthy bones right now – and it involves an old “home cure” that deserves a second look.
A bone savior
It may be a little early in the holiday season for visions of sugar plums to be dancing in your head…
But there’s one form of plum that we should TREASURE all year long.
I’m talking about dried plums – a.k.a. prunes (Prunus domestica)!
Now, the prune has a certain reputation for keeping things moving in your lower digestive tract…
But that’s not actually where its star shines the brightest.
Because it can help keep bone loss at bay… and even help you GROW BACK lost bone!
In fact, prunes are superstars among all the fruits for their ability to SUPPRESS the rate of bone turnover.
That means they can INHIBIT bone resorption… or the breakdown of mineralized tissue by cells known as osteoclasts.
That’s the process that leads to “thinning” bones (a.k.a. the loss of bone mineral density).
And according to a 2017 meta-analysis, prunes can even ENHANCE new bone formation!
And they work by ACTIVATING the “bone-building” cells known as osteoblasts.
Research shows prunes to be particularly helpful in improving bone mass in postmenopausal women who’ve already started to lose bone.
And the results can be SIGNIFICANT within just 6 months.
So… why prunes?
Well, it turns out that their nutritional profile actually makes them pretty unique among all the fruits out there.
They’re rich in free-radical-scavenging phenolic compounds… like neochlorogenic acid and chlorogenic acid…
But their ability to support bone health doesn’t stop at their antioxidant activity.
They’re also good sources of…
- vitamin K, which helps regulate bone resorption and calcium deposition
- potassium, a mineral that helps reduce calcium loss, and
- boron, a trace element that triggers bone hardening and helps vitamins (like D) and other minerals (like calcium and magnesium) build bones.
And finally, prunes have got one more bone-building trick up their sleeve.
They help improve your body’s ability to absorb iron – a mineral that works with calcium to help produce the bone ingredient known as collagen.
Now, you CAN find prune supplements… but they’re generally formulated to have a particularly laxative effect.
If that’s not what you’re looking for, a 2016 study suggests that simply eating 5 whole prunes daily is enough to keep bone loss at bay… and maintain current bone growth.
That’s just a little more than a recommended serving.
You could also try a bone health support formula… but as I’ve shared with you right here in eAlert, most of them are shockingly ABSENT of boron.
To saving the bones you’ve got,
