SQUEAKY-CLEAN arteries… without lowering LDL? [Cholesterol myth… BUSTED!]
The mainstream OBSESSION with getting patients to hit rock-bottom numbers on their cholesterol readings has gotten out of control.
It seems like they’ll come up with ANY and EVERY excuse to put more and more folks on cholesterol-lowering statins… no matter WHAT the risks!
Fact is, if your lipid panel is showing numbers that are just a little bit high… you may have NOTHING to worry about.
And you may NEVER need to take statins.
But that doesn’t mean you should IGNORE your cholesterol levels, either.
Because if the scales are tipped too far in one direction… it could set you up for heart disease.
The good news is that you can strike a PERFECT balance in your cholesterol – and you don’t necessarily need an Rx to do it.
There’s a humble vitamin trick that can help you hit the mark on your cholesterol levels… and for just pennies a day.
Is your ‘good’ cholesterol as good as it can be?
Niacin is also known as vitamin B3… and is likely included in the B complex vitamins you’re taking.
For lots of healthy folks, that would be enough.
But there is a time when even a conventional doc or pharmacist might recommend supplementing with niacin…
And that’s if your cholesterol levels aren’t what they could be.
Now, I’m not talking about “high” cholesterol…
But rather UNBALANCED cholesterol levels.
Because you DON’T want your “good” cholesterol (a.k.a. HDL) levels to be TOO LOW…
And they shouldn’t be MUCH lower than your “bad” cholesterol (a.k.a. LDL) levels.
I’ve shared with you before how high LDL on its own isn’t dangerous… and won’t NECESSARILY lead to heart disease… unless that LDL is oxidized. (More on that in a moment.)
But HDL that’s too low might not be enough to help SWEEP the “bad” fats out of your vessels.
And that’s CRUCIAL to keeping the development of fatty deposits and hardened arteries at bay.
That’s why low HDL is considered a MAJOR risk factor for heart disease.
Fortunately, taking niacin supplements can help you maintain healthy HDL levels… and help your HDL work better.
And it works without making your LDL levels dip too low, the way cholesterol-lowering meds like statins can.
That’s CRITICAL to maintaining good health, as very low LDL cholesterol numbers are associated with a higher risk of a potentially lethal type of stroke known as intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).
There’s one more thing I should mention…
Niacin has also shown to REDUCE the oxidation of LDL…
Making your “bad” cholesterol less likely to form plaques that could stiffen… narrow… and even BLOCK your arteries.
Niacin also has an incredible track record behind it, having been used to balance cholesterol levels since the 1950s.
Supplementing with it, however, does require some caution – because of the niacin “flush” that some folks experience afterwards.
You see, a therapeutic dose of niacin could dilate your blood vessels… especially those near the surface of your skin… which could make you feel hot and appear red.
Some folks also experience an itching-like sensation… which is uncomfortable for sure, but generally not dangerous.
There are “no flush” or “flush-free” niacin supplements out there… which actually contain a niacin precursor, inositol…
But research shows that it may only LOWER your cholesterol numbers… WITHOUT boosting your HDL.
Fortunately, there are niacin supplements that have been designed to minimize flushing… by extending their release after you swallow them.
You can also take them with food… and start at a lower dose and work your way up… to keep the flush from bothering you.
Talk to your doc or pharmacist… and check the label just to be sure. It should list nicotinic acid as the main active ingredient.
To keeping your cholesterol in perfect harmony,
Melissa Young
