Researchers BUNGLE findings on potential coronavirus drug therapy [Unbelievable!]
When the coronavirus pandemic started, Big Pharma didn’t have much to offer.
In fact, when this virus emerged out of the blue just a few months ago, pharma companies were caught by surprise – just as much as WE were!
There was NO specific drug. There was NO vaccine.
And there STILL isn’t.
Left empty-handed, drugmakers HAD to try something already in their product portfolios – and they zeroed in on a drug for a completely UNRELATED condition.
So, there’s been quite a bit of talk… even from President Trump… about the anti-malarial called hydroxychloroquine (HCQ).
As the drug has been tested on coronavirus patients in several countries, we’ve PRAYED that it would give us even just an INKLING of hope.
And yet over the course of the last couple of weeks… now MONTHS into the COVID-19 crisis… everything feels like it’s gone topsy-turvy.
Here’s how to make some sense out of the latest.
What a difference 2 weeks can make
And then, our hopes were DASHED when one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals, The Lancet, published a study that declared hydroxychloroquine showed ZERO benefit to coronavirus patients.
Even worse, according to the study’s authors… including its lead author, a Harvard cardiac surgeon… it seemed to elevate heart risk.
That was on May 22.
But as we’ve learned over the past couple of months, things can change more quickly than we ever before thought possible.
And on June 4… less than 2 weeks later… The Lancet published a RETRACTION.
I wouldn’t blame you if you weren’t sure what to THINK… what to HOPE for… or who to BELIEVE.
Now, studies get retracted all the time… and for a variety of reasons. The scientific community has learned to roll with the punches, so to speak.
But this situation is different – because there was a lot riding on this massive study, which involved over 96,000 patients from nearly 700 hospitals throughout the world
The World Health Organization and other research institutions didn’t HESITATE to halt their studies on HCQ in the wake of what The Lancet published back in May.
Some governments even banned HCQ from being used on ANY coronavirus patients in their countries.
And now it’s been revealed that they may have based that decision on information that was IMPERFECT – at least, unverifiable enough to warrant a retraction.
Apparently, the authors YANKED their own study because the scientific community expressed concerns… AFTER its publication.
But why didn’t any expert catch these shortcomings in the data during the peer review period BEFORE the journal goes to press?
Scientific papers are SUPPOSED to go through a rigorous evaluation BEFORE we ever see them… so we can REST ASSURED that we can TRUST the findings.
It’s tempting to take on the role of “Monday morning quarterback” to try to figure out what went wrong here… but we don’t know ALL the information.
However, we DO know that this study was RUSHED to publication – and probably because it HAD to be.
The coronavirus pandemic isn’t over yet.
But when the entire world is ready to turn on a dime… and pull the trigger more quickly than usual… the LAST thing we need is more misinformation.
And now researchers have LOST precious time that they could’ve spent making VALID scientific discoveries.
There’s something else to consider here…
The Lancet, like many other peer-reviewed scientific journals, is a . A portion of what it publishes consists of studies funded by the deep pockets of Big Pharma companies that are ALSO trying to make a buck.
The lead author of the retracted study on HCQ reports being .
I wonder what kind of financial pressure he was under to fast-track his results?
This wasn’t an isolated event.
The SAME authors published ANOTHER study… this one involving treating coronavirus patients with blood pressure meds… in The New England Journal of Medicine, also in May.
And guess what –
Clearly, the process was woefully INADEQUATE for these two studies. Who knows how many others?!
I WISH I could tell you that I have all the answers – that there’s a “magic bullet” that would make this all go away.
Right now, there isn’t.
But I’ll promise you this…
I WON’T stop digging in to the latest developments… and sharing them with you right here.
To staying safe and sane,
Melissa Young
