Pharma’s new ploy to get you doubling down on statins
You would think that at this point, with millions of Americans taking statins and plenty of others being shot up with PCSK9 inhibitors (the latest cholesterol-lowering drugs), Big Pharma and the mainstream would finally be happy.
But now that just about every customer they could grab is probably already spoken for with an Rx, the latest plan seems to be to get them doubling down on these drugs.
So, before you let your doc sell you on the idea of sending your cholesterol numbers plummeting to the basement, there are some vital facts you need to know. In a just-published meta-analysis of previous pharma-sponsored studies, industry-supported researchers reached a dangerous conclusion.
“You can’t be too low,” they claim.
According to the lead researcher on this so-called study, Dr. Marc Sabatine (who is a paid consultant for Merck, AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and 12 other drugmakers), there’s really no ground floor.
And as for the side effects that come along with slashing cholesterol numbers so drastically, researchers’ advice is not to worry about it!
But as Dr. Antonio Gotto Jr. of Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City has asked, “Can we be sure that very low levels are safe?”
Well, consider the fact that lowering LDL cholesterol numbers into the 40s… 30s… and even the 20s can set you up for a laundry list of horrific health problems ranging from depression and anxiety to cancer and hemorrhagic stroke.
And along the way, we’ve also learned that when cholesterol goes too low, the risk of depression, suicide, and violent behavior goes straight up.
So, Dr. Gotto, that answer would be… a resounding “NO!”
The fact is that despite how demonized cholesterol has become, we can’t live without it.
As Dr. Gotto points out, a baby comes out of the womb with around 40 mg/dL of LDL cholesterol, so it must be there “for some purpose and reason.”
So, why would it be safe to have adults medicating themselves down to levels lower than a newborn’s?
But if you’re wondering how this new study even turned up an inkling of a reason that this would be a good idea, just go right to its source — the past “findings” that this just-out research is built upon.
One of the studies included, called FOURIER, cost drugmaker Amgen (which makes the PCSK9 med Repatha) a billion dollars to complete.
With that kind of cash, of course the results were all sunshine and unicorns!
And many — if not all — of these glowing cholesterol drug studies were financed (and oftentimes run) by none other than Pharma Land employees themselves.
Look, not only will driving down cholesterol to unprecedented lows wreak havoc on your health – as well as your brain – but the side effects are a disaster all on their own.
Statins, for example, are known to cause new-onset diabetes, liver damage, Parkinson’s disease, and hardening of the arteries. And these new PCSK9 meds were approved under a cloud of “neurocognitive adverse events.”
The truth is that no matter what these experts say, they really don’t know the consequences of lowering cholesterol to these kinds of extremes.
But they won’t hesitate to find out… by using you as a guinea pig.
