Mom was right! Here’s why you should eat your broccoli
If I told you that a compound called “13C” was found to prevent colon cancer, you would probably think I was talking about a promising billion-dollar drug under development.
But while 13C has been studied by scientists all over the world, it’s about as far from Big Pharma’s laboratories as anything could possibly be.
It comes to you straight from Mother Nature, easily found with no prescription required!
And once you hear about the latest findings of how this miracle substance can not only nip this deadly cancer in the bud… but also slow the growth of existing tumors in the colon… you’re going to want to get your hands on some of it right away.
Could the answer to preventing colon cancer be right in front of you?
Well, it appears that it very well may be… perhaps even in your vegetable crisper right now!
Because 13C is an amazing chemical found in “brassica vegetables,” which also go by the name “cruciferous,” such as broccoli, cabbage, and kale.
You know by now that eating your daily “dose” of fruits and veggies is necessary if you want to do everything in your power to stay healthy. But these new findings out of the Francis Crick Institute in London actually teased apart the especially healthy compounds found in brassica veggies.
And they found that 13C in mice is as devastating to colon cancer as kryptonite is to Superman!
Using mice specially bred to develop gut inflammation, which is expected to lead right to colon cancer, the Crick researchers found that in the mice fed food enriched with 13C, those cancer-prone rodents didn’t develop the expected inflammation… or cancer.
And the mice who already had colon tumors ended up with fewer, “more benign” growths.
The researchers called these findings “a cause for optimism,” especially for those who may have a genetically higher risk of coming down with colon cancer.
Study leader Dr. Gitta Stockinger noted that seeing the “profound effect of diet on gut inflammation and colon cancer was very striking” — particularly the way these beneficial compounds can play such an important role in colon cancer prevention.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that researchers have made some amazing discoveries when it comes to brassica vegetables and cancer.
A couple of years ago, we told you about a study out of Oregon State University that found that a compound in broccoli (and the other veggies in this group), called sulforaphane, was able to slow the growth of breast cancer cells in women to a crawl.
What all this research should tell us is that fruits and vegetables – especially powerful ones such as those in the brassica family – are more potent in their ability to keep us healthy than the costliest drugs coming out of Pharma Land.
So, make sure to have one or more of these powerhouse veggies in your diet every single day — which should be easy enough to accomplish considering how many there are to choose from.
For example, along with broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, you can start including more turnips, watercress, bok choy, collard greens, kale, arugula, and radishes in your diet.
And for a super easy brassica boost, have some horseradish!
Research out of the University of Illinois discovered that horseradish — that neglected condiment sitting in your fridge — has 10 times the amount of cancer-fighting compounds in broccoli!
But here’s the best part: A teaspoon is all it takes to get the fantastic benefits horseradish has to offer.
And since this root actually becomes healthier when processed, you don’t have to grate fresh horseradish to take advantage of it.
You can mix the spicy condiment into sauces, salad dressings, or mayo for your tuna salad – you could even top a meat or poultry dish with some straight out of the jar!
